Tom Baker's heaven on earth: Montreal, Canada

A View From A Distance, Montreal, CANADA

Tom Baker visited Montreal as a young man working on a cruise ship.

The following are his direct quotes from that experience:

"I sailed from Liverpool to Montreal via New York when I worked as an orderly in the sick bay of a cruise ship as a young man. We travelled down the St Lawrence river on a beautiful spring morning as dawn was breaking and I remember standing on deck, all alone, as we approached Montreal, which even then boasted quite a skyline, and thinking: "Wow, it can't get better than this!"

"But, actually, it did in a way, because I had the most fantastic time in Montreal. It's the most charming of North American cities, thanks in no small part to the juxtaposition of English and French influences. No doubt a lot has changed since then, but much hasn't from what I gather. I visited the magnificent twin-towered Basilique Notre Dame (www.basiliquenddm.org), one of the city's architectural gems, and headed up Mont Royal, the nearest thing to a mountain in Montreal, which has wonderful views of the city. And I remember having a giant smoked meat sandwich at Schwartz's (www.schwartzsdeli.com), a famous Jewish deli that is still a major Montreal institution."

"The place to stay was the Ritz-Carlton Hotel (001 514 842 4212; www.ritzmontreal.com), but I was too poor at the time, and besides, I could stay in my own cabin. But the thing I remember most clearly about Montreal was chatting up the local crumpet. I had a winning way with the ladies back then. I would frown as if I had a terrible headache and some girl would invariably take pity on me, I would tell them some sob story and one thing would lead to another."

"Funnily enough, I've never been back to Montreal, though I have since returned to Canada several times, because I fear I could just never recapture the magic of that visit. I'd rather just enjoy the memory of a wonderful few days that will stay with me forever."
