The BBC2 series Late Night Story featured then Doctor Who
(BBC, 1963-89; 1996; 2005-) star Tom Baker
reading to camera four macabre stories on the theme of childhood, which
were shown just prior to the channel's closedown. A fifth episode, 'Sredni Vashtar'
by 'Saki' (Hector Hugh Munro), about a sickly young boy and his
obsession with the titular ferret, was scheduled to start the series on
22 December, but went unscreened due to a BBC strike. The other stories were:
'The Photograph' (tx. 23/12/1978) by Nigel Kneale,
'The Emissary' (tx. 25/12/1978) by Ray Bradbury,
'Nursery Tea' (26/12/1978) by Mary Danby and
'The End of the Party' (28/12/1978) by Graham Greene.
